You are CRA and / or PM, how to get a pay raise?
You are CRA or PM (Project Manager) and you want a revaluation of your wages, this article is for you.
In the pharmaceutical industry, the CROs or at the hospital, wages tend to stagnate in these
crisis times. The Clinical Research Associate profession requires a strong personal commitment and a strong expertise. What could be more logical than to ask for a raise to his employer? However, such a request is being prepared because you must prove that you deserve it. This article will give you an overview of how to proceed and how to put the odds in your favor.
When asking for a pay raise?
Since 2014, a professional meeting is integrated for the first time in the Labor Code. It aims to promote dialogue within the company about the career prospects of the employee, especially in terms of qualification and employment. It takes place every two years from the hiring date (Art. L6315-1 of the Labor Code).
Generally, there are also annual or biannual assessment meetings during which you can deal the same topics with your manager.
During one of these two meetings (professional meeting and / or assessment meeting), discussing salary increase would be fashionable. It is better to avoid this type of request for at least 1 year of seniority and not more than once a year. That is why it is important to negotiate well at the beginning.
However, you can also make such request at any time while you get a remarkable success (objectives exceeded). Judge yourself!
If your company does not schedule an annual meeting, you can make such request tactfully with your superior.
Many companies have funds allocated to pay rises and bonuses. Get secretly information about the company policies on the matter. In general, it is the managers who determine who will have the merit of receiving a pay rise.
The preparation of the request for pay rise
The preparation of your request for pay rise involves inevitably the preparation of your assessment meeting.
- Gather the necessary information:
– The average salary of a CRA / PM (although it varies depending on the type of company, of course, the experience level and type of expertise). You have to assess where you are in the market.
From these results, you can better stick to the market reality.
Surely you wonder where you can find the information. These data are freely available on the internet and the clinical research blog will nicely tell you where they are if you have already subscribed to our newsletter on the blog or if you subscribe before September 30th (Our subscribers receive an update of this article with all the details by email from October 1st)
2. Prepare your arguments:
Why you and not another? You have to make a track record of all the qualitative and quantitative evidence (objectives exceeding, significant savings, exceptional speed, avoided mistakes) that shows that you are a deserving CRA / PM. These are the elements that you will present to your manager.
However, you still have to prepare morally to the face-to-face negotiation that will follow, because there where you must be the most convincing.
Negotiate directly for pay raise to his employer: how to deal with it?
During the meeting, you need to deal straight in the matter. You can put forward (irrefutable) evidence of your investment in the company. Then, you need to convince your manager and confirm with him that your results have provided real added value to the company. He must fully agree (you have to get a real “yes”). Only in the second part of the conversation that you may request a salary increase (you can even announce the percentage increase).
Obviously, your manager reaction is not what you expected (positive or mostly negative).
How if the answer is no?
- If it is about a challenging economic time, you can negotiate to delay the pay rise or replace it by a bonus. You can suggest another benefit as a replacement: holiday vouchers, gift vouchers, telework (days a week), training.
- If he requests some times, make sure you have set with your manager a definitive deadline answer.
